Our Story

Hi! We are Green Reconnection.

Welcome to our vibrant community!  We are committed to enhancing mental health in communities directly affected by climate change and in groups that have been indirectly affected by climate change with psychological resilience, behavioral change and education programs and initiatives. Our mission focuses on empowering individuals to become proactive agents in climate action to adapt to climate change, rebuild their communities and enhance their overall wellbeing.

Research indicates that psychological traumas from any disaster exceed those of physical injury 40 to 1. Additionally, climate change indirectly affects mental wellbeing, leading to anxiety or depression, and hindering long-lasting climate action participation.

How do we expect people to be a part of climate solutions if their mental health is being impacted by the climate crisis?

Amidst this, our concept of “Green Reconnection” holds profound significance. It symbolizes reconnecting with our home planet and with ourselves while enjoying the journey.

Green Reconnection means not just healing from climate-induced mental health impacts but also cultivating a deeper connection with the natural world, our communities, and our lifestyle to build a path toward climate resilience. Green Reconnection started in Mexico and we hope to soon expand in Latin America and more regions.

Join us in making a lasting impact!

With all our love and support,
The Green Reconnection Team

Nuestra Historia

¡Hola! Somos Green Reconnection.

¡Bienvenidx a nuestra vibrante comunidad!

Who Are We?

¡Hola! I am Valeria Horton and I love our home planet as much as you do.

Founder of Green Reconnection. I am a passionate communicator from Mexico City! As the lead negotiator for Loss and Damage at COP27 and SB58 and an advisor at COP28, I’ve played a pivotal role in climate negotiations at the UNFCCC.

In 2022, I was selected as the “Operación COP” Youth Climate Ambassador for Mexico, becoming one of the first youth lead negotiators for my country and at the UNFCCC. Recognized as an “Environmental Leader” by the Instituto Jane Goodall and a “Climate Leader” by The Climate Reality Project, I contribute to social and environmental progress. Additionally, I am a member of the Communications team at Social Progress Imperative. My dedication to climate action is further solidified by attending the Negotiation and Leadership Program at Harvard Law School through a scholarship from The Climate Reality Project.

My Story

My passion for the environment started when I was in elementary school. One of my best friends invited me to join “The Green Squad”. It was a student group whose goal was to inspire our school to be more eco-friendly.

At age 11, we made the most incredible powerpoint slides and presented our eco-tips in front of the school. I was shocked when I saw that the 6 year-olds were the ones who were more compromised than the older generations. We collected thousands of tetra packs to recycle them and metal ring pulls for donation.

As I grew up, I started to love the planet more and more and I also got interested in social problems. In high school, I decided I wanted to be a cinematographer because I strongly believed that through movies, people become more empathetic.

Movies make us feel alive. Movies inspire us. Movies make us feel we are living someone else’s life. And that is a-maz-ing.

Time went by, I graduated and I had to decide on a bachelor’s degree. Lucky me, I had no doubt. I studied Communications and Media Studies so I could become an extraordinary cinematographer.

After 4 years, and a lot of “artistic” photos, I learned the most valuable lesson: my passion for the movies was basically because of the positive impact I believed I could have on society and the environment through storytelling.

I understood that there are thousands of different opportunities to dedicate your work to social wellbeing and that sustainability supports it.

And so, I discovered my true passion: our home planet.

Mi Historia

Hi, I am Soph! I am a storyteller who still cares for the Earth.

COPY EDITOR

From a very young age I was always taught by my parents and teachers that we should take care of our planet. Not just because it was the right thing to do, but because it is our home. So I made it my life’s mission to care for the Earth in every way I could, or at least in every way a 12-year-old was able to.

I remember constantly reminding my dad to close the refrigerator door or to turn the lights off if he left a room. “You’re killing the planet!” I would say when I scolded him. I bought tons of arts and crafts books focused on reusing materials, and I even attempted to make my own recycled paper several times.

Among a couple other professions I dreamed of at that age, it was my goal to become an ecologist when I grew up. Little Sofía even wanted to write a book on the subject of “global warming and how to stop it” someday.

Life happened and my dreams took me someplace else, specifically the entertainment industry. I found the path to the world of immersive storytelling and became a production designer. From films to theme parks, I create the environments where all sorts of stories take place. It is my job to transport people to the worlds that they dream of and let them step into their favorite stories.

I still think that taking care of our planet is extremely important. And I still find joy in doing so. Granted, I did not study anything related to sustainability like I once promised to. But you know what? That’s okay. Because while I am not dedicating my career specifically to saving the Earth, I can still do it on the side while continuing to do what I love. And who knows? Maybe I even find the opportunity of creating awareness within my field. The important thing is to do what we can within our possibilities, and to never stop learning and becoming better at it.

Inspired by Valeria’s passion and determination in spreading awareness to save the planet, I’m more than happy to help her with this amazing project in any way I can. Whether you dedicate your life to stopping climate change, or just make small lifestyle adjustments to decrease your carbon footprint, it doesn’t matter. Do not ever believe that your contribution has no impact. The first step is to start somewhere.

Hello! I am Antonio. I am an animal lover and an enthusiastic photographer.

COLLABORATING PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER

Since I can remember, I have been in love with wildlife. I spent my entire childhood watching animal documentaries and learning about them. The reasons why wildlife strikes me are because of the incredible beauty, shocking power, dexterity, instincts, and social structures that they have had since the beginning of all species.

Besides that, animals have always had different meanings to human cultures, which make them crucial partners in the history of mankind. For example, the Mayan culture considered the jaguar their god, in the United States the bald eagle symbolizes nationalism, and in India the tiger symbolizes victory.

As I got older, I became more interested in photography, and taking animal pictures was a great way to combine two of my biggest passions in life. Moreover, when I went to college, I started to be more environmentally conscious because I started to learn about the climate crisis and became more interested in learning how I can help.

Using photography is a very efficient way to communicate emotions, information, memories and more, something that has been done since its invention. The photographs I take and publish have the goal of showing my way of seeing the world and touching people’s feelings. Additionally, I decided to take even more wildlife pictures to encourage people close to me to be more eco friendly in their day-to-day lives.

I know that without the internet it is impossible to be up to date with world events. As I got more intrigued about how to be a greener person, I started to do more research on how to reduce my carbon and water footprints. Unfortunately, we live in a time of over-information, false data and unsubstantiated assumptions. I realized that there must exist websites that counter those fake news portals with accurate and true data.

That is why I have decided to support this blog, which publishes efficient sustainable changes based on true data. I contribute with photos that inspire and encourage the readers to lead a more sustainable life and take care of the environment.
